Kim Young-suk (born February 25, 1959 in Asan , Chungcheongnam-do ) is a South Korean civil servant and has been Minister for Oceans and Fisheries since November 2015 .

Life

Kim Young-suk attended secondary school in Cheonan and then studied administrative science at Kyungpook National University , where he obtained his bachelor's degree in February 1982 and passed the exam for administrative officials in 1984. From January 1996 he attended lectures at Syracuse University in the United States , where he obtained his Master of Public Administration in January 1998 .

After his training Kim began in 1998 at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF) as director of the Marine Environment Division ( dt. "Division of Marine Environment") to work, but moved back in August of the same year as First Secretary to the Embassy of South Korea in the United Kingdom . In 2001 he returned to South Korea and became director of the Marine Development Division of the MOMAF. In 2006 he was appointed director general of the Marine Policy Bureau . From January 2007 to March 2008 he was General Director of the Planning and Public Relations Office of the Bid Committee for Expo 2012 and then switched to his old position as General Director at MOMAF. In January 2009 he took over the management of the former regional office in Busan of MOMAF, which was dissolved at the end of 2008, and in July 2011 was appointed deputy general director of the organizing committee of Expo 2012.

After serving for Expo 2012, Kim joined the office of the re-established Department of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) as a secretary and was appointed vice minister on August 4, 2014. Acting Minister Yoo Ki-june resigned on November 11, 2015 to run for a seat in the National Assembly in the 2016 elections (members of the National Assembly can be appointed ministers, but ministers are not allowed to run for the National Assembly and must resign from office for a candidacy at least 90 days in advance). Kim Young-suk was appointed minister by President Park Geun-hye to succeed him.
