The Jamaica Defense Force Coast Guard (JDF CG) is the coast guard of the Jamaica Defense Force and represents, so to speak, the naval forces of the Jamaican armed forces .
history
With the re-establishment of national armed forces under the 1962 obtained independence of the country, was established in 1963 with the Seestaffel Jamaica Sea Squadron of the Jamaica National Reserve set up a national marine component for the first time.
The US government initially handed over three wooden 19.2 m torpedo fishing boats from the Second World War as patrol boats . Based on the British name HMS for Her Majesty's Ship , the boats were named HMJS for Her Majesty's Jamaican Ship and were given the baptismal names Yoruba ( ship identification P 1), Coromante (P 2) and Mandingo (P 3). The training staff at that time provided the Royal Navy .
In 1966 it was reclassified to the Jamaica Defense Force Coast Guard. Badges of rank and uniform patterns were adopted by the Royal Navy, the White Ensign of the British naval forces modified accordingly. In addition, the torpedo fishing boats were decommissioned in 1966 and three 25.9 m aluminum bay-class patrol boats were put into service, the HMJS Discovery Bay (P 4) in 1966 and the HMJS Holland Bay BAY (P 5) as well the HMJS Manatee Bay (P 6) one year later. In 1974 - in the same year the Coast Guard became its own armed forces - the HMJS Fort Charles (P 7) and in 1985 the HMJS Paul Bogle (P 8), in order to be able to operate on the high seas. With the acquisition of three patrol boats of the so-called county class in 2006/2007, the boats of the bay class were decommissioned.
Basic training for Coast Guard personnel takes place at the JDF Training Depot in Newcastle , Saint Andrew Parish . In addition, the officer candidates are trained at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth and on the training ship HMS Conway . Partnership programs are in place with the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada for specialized training. Since 2012, training has also been taking place at the Canadian-Jamaican Caribbean Military Maritime Training Center (CMMTC).
