Boston Whaler is an American motor boat brand. She is also known just as a whaler . Normally one has Whaler a foam-filled fiberglass body In a outboard motor and a central control console. The boats are in Boston Whaler, Inc. produces.

The original whaler was 13 feet long , which is about 4 meters. It was produced in 1956 by Richard T. "Dick" Fisher and C. Raymond Hunt. The core of the fiberglass hull was filled with the then new polyurethane foam . This design was adopted by other shipyards. In contrast to commercially available fiberglass boats, this type of construction had the advantage that the material was more stable. There was also the aspect of unsinkability due to the foam filling and the significantly lower noise level.

Most Boston Whaler boats were sold for water sports, e.g. B. fishing, water skiing or as a dinghy for larger yachts. In addition, the coast guard and other authorities worldwide were buyers of these robust boats.

Although this type of boat was originally produced in Massachusetts , today's production takes place in Edgewater , Florida . After several changes of ownership over time, Boston Whaler is now part of the Brunswick Corporation in Lake Forest , Illinois , which also includes Mercury Marine . So it stands to reason that the boats now come standard with Mercury outboards.

The current product range includes seven different types with lengths between 9 and 34 feet (2.7 to 10.4 meters) and various engine variants between 3.75 kW (5 PS) and 560 kW (750 PS). The success of the boats lies not least in the fact that they are considered unsinkable. In Life Magazine and in advertising campaigns, boats were repeatedly filled with water or sawed up and swam on. Dick Fisher sawed the hull of a boat across for Life and then pulled the floating bow back into the harbor with the floating stern.

It is now mandatory in the United States to make unsinkable boats under 20 feet in length.
