Storm at Heights 404 (Original title: The Young Warriors ) is an American war film by director John Peyser from 1967 . The script is based on the novel The Beardless Warriors by screenwriter Richard Matheson.
action
Sergeant Cooley, a war-tired officer, served in Europe in 1944. His unit receives reinforcements made up of new and inexperienced recruits. One of the recruits, Hacker, is stunned by the experience after his first battle. But he quickly comes to terms with the events and soon kills his enemies with fanatical zeal. Nor does he shrink from shooting down a German soldier who wants to surrender. Cooley blames him for this act. The young soldier resented his superior.
When the US troops tried to storm a farm occupied by German soldiers, Cooley was wounded. Hacker runs through enemy fire to his sergeant and carries him to safety. In the field hospital, Cooley invites Hacker, who never had a real home, to visit him in New Mexico. After Cooley is sent back to the States, Hacker is promoted to sergeant. Back at the front, he is now preparing young men to go into battle.
Reviews
The lexicon of the international film saw in the film "military training film of poor design".
Howard Thompson of the New York Times saw the film more positively. The film has the usual round, which includes the usual overzealous killer and two or three comedians. The fight scenes, however, have a factual authenticity. Grigg's tight camera work with the rough and bleak backgrounds says more about the psychological nature of the war than anything else.
The "TV Guide" also praises the surprisingly good camera work, which compensates for the weak elements of the film. The directing is described as superficial.
The Protestant film observer does not think much of the film: “Typical American color widescreen war film, the kaleidoscope-like episodes from the experience of a group of GIs on the battlefield in Europe. Unfortunately, too little in depth and of a weak external shape. "
