Timbuktu ( pronunciation : [ timbɐkˈtuː ], real name Jason Michael Robinson Diakité ; born January 11, 1975 in Lund ) is a Swedish rapper and reggae artist . His music also contains folk and blues as well as West African elements. He comes from Skåne , the southernmost province of Sweden , and also raps in Scanian . His texts are mainly about political issues.

Career

Timbuktu began rapping in the 1990s and quickly became a celebrity in the Malmö scene as well as in Stockholm and Copenhagen . In the mid-1990s he founded the group "Excel" together with a Danish rapper. In 2000 he released his first record called T2: Kontrakultur , a collaboration with Breakmecanix . This work is a double album with one half in English and the other half in Swedish. While recording T2: Kontrakultur he went on a concert tour with Petter and Thomas Rusiak . Timbuktu has also worked with the Swedish hip-hop association Looptroop at times .
