Zvečan ( Serbian - Cyrillic Звечан , Albanian  Zveçan or Zveçani ) is a small town and seat of the municipality of the same name in the north of the Republic of Kosovo . It is one of the four municipalities in northern Kosovo that are not controlled by the Kosovar government in Pristina .

The town of Zvečan is only about one kilometer north of Mitrovica . Both places are separated from each other by the hill of Zvečan, on which the fortress is located. Zvečan is also surrounded by a hilly landscape in the west and north. The small town is bordered to the east by the Ibar River .

history

For the first time Zvečan was mentioned in connection with the Serbian-Byzantine border conflicts between 1091 and 1094 as Sfentzanion . After the victory of the Serbs over Byzantium under the rule of the Serbian Prince Stefan Nemanja in 1170, Nemanja ordered a service in the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. George, which was located in the vicinity of Zvečan, due to the successful outcome of the battle Remains still exist today.

In the 13th and 14th centuries, Zvečan was one of the most important royal residences of the Serbian ruling dynasties of the Nemanjids . In December 1322, the Serbian Queen Teodora died in Zvečan. The Albanian freedom fighter and politician of the Albanian national movement Rilindja Isa Boletini was born in the village of Boletin in today's municipality of Zvečan.

Zvečan remained a small settlement for a long time until the first urban development measures began in 1948. At that time there were still 726 people living in the place, this number increased continuously in the following decades. In 1990 the independent municipality Zvečan was formed, until then the place was under the administration of Mitrovica.

Zvečan is mostly inhabited by Serbs , but Bosniaks , Gorans and Roma also live as a small minority in the place. Since northern Kosovo did not take part in the 2011 census, no current population data are available for this area. An estimate from 2009 gave Zvečan a population of 1297.
