Gustaf Wesslau (born February 5, 1985 in Upplands Väsby , Sweden ) is a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper who was under contract with the Kölner Haien in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) from 2015 to 2020 .

Career

At the beginning of his career Wesslau went through the youth teams of the AIK and was initially active for three seasons in the J18 Allsvenskan . Between 2002 and 2005 the Swede was mainly in the J20 SuperElit between the posts, but also completed his first professional appearances in the first team of the AIK in the second highest Swedish league HockeyAllsvenskan . In the 2005/06 season Wesslau initially played 30 games for the AIK before he was given to the Malmö Redhawks during the current season . There he made his first games in the Elitserien , Sweden's top division, in the 2006/07 season .

While the left catcher again guarded the goal in the HockeyAllsvenskan for Borås HC in the 2007/08 season , he was committed to the following season by Djurgården Hockey from the Elitserien and was the goalkeeper there for two seasons. During this time, Wesslau established himself as one of Sweden's top goalkeepers and was instrumental in making his team reach the finals in the 2009/10 season with a catch rate of 94% and an average of 1.80 goals conceded in 15 play-off games was subject to the HV71 . In March 2010, Wesslau was signed by the Columbus Blue Jackets from the National Hockey League due to his shown performance at Djurgården . As part of his two-way contract , however, he was used exclusively in the American Hockey League with the Blue Jackets ' farm team , the Springfield Falcons , in the 2010/11 season .

For the 2011/12 season , the Swede returned to Djurgården and completed 54 main round games and 10 play-off games. In April 2012 Wesslau was signed by league competitor HV71 and was awarded the Honkens Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the league in the 2012/13 season with a catch rate of 92.8% and an average of 2.00 goals against in 43 games this season . In March 2015 it was announced that Wesslau will be in goal with the Kölner Haien from the German Ice Hockey League from the 2015/16 season . He was named the best DEL goalkeeper in the main round 2016/17. After 5 years in the Haie jersey, he played his last game for the club from the Rhineland on February 25, 2020 . In this he was able to achieve his 16th shutout in his time in Cologne in a 5-0 win against the Grizzly Wolfsburg . He played a total of 235 games for the people of Domstadt and achieved a catch quota of 92.1 percent.

Between 2011 and 2013 he played his first international matches for the Swedish national ice hockey team , including on the Euro Hockey Tour .
