Johan Davidsson (born January 6, 1976 in Jönköping ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who spent a large part of his career at HV71 in the Svenska Hockeyligan , where he was team captain for a total of ten years from 2002 to 2013 and who holds several club records.

Career

Europe (1992-1998)

Johan Davidsson began his career in 1992 in his hometown with the Swedish first division club HV71 . In the 1992/93 season he gained his first experience in the Elitserien and became a regular player in Jönköping in the following years. During this time he was selected in the second round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft in 28th position by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . In the season 1994/95 he won the Swedish championship with Jönköping for the first time in his career . 1997 Davidsson was committed by HIFK Helsinki from the Finnish SM-liiga , with which he won the Finnish championship in his only season .

North America (1998-2000)

Subsequently, he succeeded the immediate jump into the NHL roster of the Mighty Ducks and was used regularly during the season, although his position was filled with players such as Steve Rucchin , Travis Green and Matt Cullen . His second season in Anaheim was less successful and the Swede mainly played on the farm team at the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks in the American Hockey League . On March 11, 2000, the Californians gave him in a transfer deal together with a performance-based option in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Jörgen Jönsson to the New York Islanders . For the Islanders Davidsson completed 14 games and scored six points before his expiring contract was not renewed after the end of the season. In September 2000 he signed a contract as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks , for which he never played and instead returned to Europe.

Return to Europe (2000-2014)

The following season the Swede completed in the Finnish SM-liiga with the Espoo Blues . For the 2001/02 season he returned to his home country for the HV71 and was the team captain from the following season . In 2004, 2008 and 2010 he won the Swedish championship three more times with Jönköping and was also elected to the All-Star-Team of the Elitserien several times during this time. Furthermore, Davidsson received the Guldpucken in 2004 , in 2009 he was honored with the Guldhjälmen as best player of the year and in 2010 he won the Stefan Liv Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player in the play-offs. In January 2010 the Swede extended his contract with HV71 for another five years despite offers from Switzerland and Russia. After not playing any more games in the 2013/14 season , Davidsson announced the official end of his career in April 2014. He played a total of 17 seasons for Jönköping and set new club records for most games, goals and assists.

Davidsson has been assistant to sporting director Johan Hult at HV71 since the 2014/15 season .

International

At junior level, Davidsson represented the Swedish national team at the Junior World Championships in 1994 , 1995 and 1996 and the U18 European Championships in 1993 and 1994 . For the senior team Davidsson played at the World Championships in 2002 , 2003 , 2004 and 2007 . He won the silver medal with the Swedish selection in 2003 and 2004. In October 2011, after a total of 129 games, he announced his resignation from the Swedish national team.
