Croizet-sur-Gand ( KRA: ze Syr gɑ ) is a French municipality with 314 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

history

As its name suggests, the village arose at a point where two medieval (perhaps even older) streets crossed: this was the Grande voie Charra that led from Lyon to Vichy and the Voie Sayette , the Feurs with Roanne across the linked right bank of the Loire. One arm of the road formed the border between the Beaujolais and the Forez, as can be seen in a treaty that was signed on May 8, 1222 between Guy de Forez and Humbert de Beaujeu. It ran almost exactly through what is now the hamlet of Ratille , where Gallo-Roman objects were found in a well .

Croysel is mentioned as a parish of St. Etienne in 1275. In 1604 it belonged to Lay. Pierre de Pomey is mentioned as Seigneur of Croizet in 1598.

The current name Croizet-sur-Gand was introduced in 1950 at the request of the administration to better distinguish it from other places of the same name.

In 2012 there were still two companies that manufactured scarves, thus continuing the tradition of muslin production; they still employ 35 people.

Population development

In 2011 the community had 297 inhabitants. It is well known that since 1793 the population of the parishes has decreased. Starting in the 21st century, censuses are held every 5 years in communities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants; in other municipalities a sample survey takes place every year.

particularities

Fontaine de Saint Fortunat

Fontaine St Fortunat

In the middle of the village there is a wash house with a spring, in the clear water of which the white statue of Fortunat is reflected. The Roman poet was born in Treviso in 530 and was Bishop of Poitiers from 600 to 610 . The fountain used to be a place of pilgrimage to cure people with walking difficulties; especially mothers brought their children here when they learned to walk late or not at all.

LACIM

Croizet is the seat of an important association to help the 3rd world: Les amis d'un coin de l'Inde et du monde (LACIM) ('Friends of a part of India and the world'). The association was founded in 1968 by the resident Mrs. Claude Charlat, who devoted her energies to it until her death in 2004.
