history

The Sail part of the name Sail-les-Bains is derived from the Latin word salius (to jump). Salientes means "fountain", aqua saliens means "bubbling water". Thus the medicinal springs of Sail-les-Bains were already known in Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486 AD). The addition les-Bains comes from a later period, it is French and means "the baths".

In 1793 Sail-les-Bains was officially recognized as a "municipality" during the French Revolution (1789–1799). Back then it was just called Sail . In 1801 the parish was granted the right to local self-government and both names were used, both Sail and Sail-Les-Bains .

In the 19th century the health resort was as well known as Vichy , today it has lost its importance.
