Le Coteau is a French municipality with 6872 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Roanne and the canton of Le Coteau . Le Coteau is a member of the Roannais Agglomération municipal association . The inhabitants are called Costellois (es) .
geography
Le Coteau is located on the east bank of the Rhône in the Massif Central . The river Rhins forms the eastern boundary of the municipality. Neighboring municipalities of Le Coteau are Roanne in the north and north-west, Perreux in the north-east, Saint-Vincent-de-Boisset in the east and south-east, Parigny in the south and Commelle-Vernay in the west and south-west.
From 1833 the community was the end point of the Roanne – Andrézieux railway, the third railway line in France. This line was later rerouted between Balbigny and Le Coteau and integrated into the Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons-Lyon-Perrache railway. Furthermore, the Le Coteau – Saint-Germain-au-Mont-d'Or railway line has branched off in Le Coteau since 1866 and the Le Coteau – Montchanin railway line since 1882 . Today is the station of trains of TER Auvergne Rhône-Alpes of the connection Roanne - Saint-Etienne-Châteaucreux served.
