Romain Poyet (born November 25, 1980 in Le Coteau ) is a former French football player .

Career

Poyet began playing football in 1987 in the area of Roanne and later moved to the training center of AS Saint-Étienne , where he only stayed a year, however, as he was assessed by the coaches as physically weak. Then he played again for two small clubs from the Roanne region. In 2001 the winger signed with the fourth division club AS Saint-Priest , where he became a regular player. Thanks to a good performance in a cup game against AJ Auxerre , he was signed by the first division club in the summer of 2002. However, he remained in the fourth division, as he was initially set up in Auxerre only in the second team. On September 20, 2003, he made his first division debut after more than a year when he was substituted on in the 87th minute in the 4-1 win against SC Bastia . Overall, he did not come in the league over six games, where he was always substituted. Accordingly, a loan deal was organized in the summer of 2004 and Poyet moved to the second division Clermont Foot for a year . At Clermont, he was an immediate achievement and scored ten goals. After his return to Auxerre, he was called up more often, but still exclusively as a substitute player. As a result, after three years in Auxerre, he had not been used in twenty first division games from the start and had not scored a single goal. However, he scored for the team on his UEFA Cup debut on September 15, 2005 against Levski Sofia after his substitution and ran on in the second leg, but could not prevent Auxerre's elimination.

The contract was not renewed at the end of the 2005/06 season and Poyet found a new employer at FCO Dijon instead . At Dijon he played more often and was also regularly in the starting line-up, even if he did not have a large number of goals. In January 2008 he moved to league competitor Stade Brest , where he was scheduled as a joker, but as which he was used in almost every game. With the Breton team, he was also promoted to the first division in 2010. Even after that, Poyet remained a regular in the team and was able to secure relegation twice until he decided to move to SM Caen at the beginning of the 2012/13 season. At Caen, Poyet took on the role of the Joker again, as which he was substituted on, as in Brest, in most of the matches. After the summer break in 2013, however, he lost all meaning within the team, did not get beyond a short stint and was therefore awarded to third division club SC Amiens in January 2014 . At the end of the season his time in Amiens ended, but the 33-year-old was not allowed to return to the first division Caen. Instead, he continued to stay with SC Amiens, where he was now regularly called up.

At the end of the 2014/15 season he ended his playing career at the age of 34 after 87 first division games with six goals and 185 second division games with 27 goals. However, Poyet stayed with SC Amiens and took over the role of assistant coach.
