Tairua Harbor is a natural harbor on the Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The Tairua Harbor is located on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula with access to the Pacific Ocean . The two places Tairua and Pauanui are located directly at the approximately 117 m wide access to the natural harbor, which is around 5.4 km long and 1.2 km at its widest point. The coastline of the elongated body of water stretches for around 16 km. The natural harbor, which administratively belongs to the Thames-Coromandel District and the Waikato region, can be reached via the New Zealand State Highway 25 , which runs past the west bank.
On the northern side of the port entrance are the remains of an old volcanic cone, Mount Paku . The 179 m high peak of the mountain allows a wide view over the natural harbor and the adjacent mountains.
New development area with canals
In the western part of the village of Pauanui , a new development area with canals has arisen, where each house has its own jetty. The canals are directly connected to Tairua Harbor via an entrance and thus have access to the navigable area of the port and the Pacific Ocean.
