Pauanui is a small town in the Thames-Coromandel District of the Waikato regionon the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name of the place arose from the combination of " paua " = mussel or shellfish ( paua mussels ) and " nui " = large or many.
geography
The place is located around 32 km northeast of Thames and around 42 km north of Waihi on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula . The place is created on a headland on the south side of the confluence of the Tairua Habour in the Pacific Ocean . Tairua is on the north side .
Pauanui is accessible from New Zealand State Highway 25 via a road that runs south of the Tairua River parallel to the river upstream and has a small airport, Pauanui Beach Airport .

In the 2013 census, the town had 750 inhabitants, 1.2% more than in the 2006 census.
tourism
The place was created as a holiday home area and has a 3 km long sandy beach and good opportunities for swimming, surfing, golf and tennis. There are also offers for other activities such as hiking, cycling, hunting and canoeing. In the center of the village there is a small service center with a supermarket, library, three dining establishments, a small church and a few other shops. In the middle of the headland are two parks, Kennedy Park and Gallagher Park .
