course

Railway bridge over the Isar near Achering

The route branches off northeast of the station Neufahrn (b Freising) height freely by the Munich-Regensburg railway from. After a few hundred meters it meets the A92 and runs parallel to it from here. South of the A92, the Neufahrner curve from the direction of Freising meets the route and merges into it at no elevation. At Achering , the B11 is crossed under at the Freising-Süd junction. Then the route runs along the motorway through the Isar floodplains, crosses the Isar and then follows the airport feeder. Shortly before the airport premises, it meets the Munich East – Munich Airport railway line at the Munich Airport West junction .

history

After Munich Airport opened in 1992, it was only connected to the rail network via the Munich East – Munich Airport railway line . The Neufahrn link was built to create a second connection. The groundbreaking ceremony was on March 18, 1997, and the line was opened on November 29, 1998.

On August 16, 2003, two S-Bahn trains collided in the area where the line was being extended towards the airport, which had been split in Neufahrn shortly before. Several people were injured. The first part, which was supposed to go to Freising, was directed to the airport due to an incorrectly set switch. The driver therefore stopped the train and came to a stop in front of the contacts that set the exit signal to red ( signal stop case ). This stayed green. According to the regulations, the driver of the second train should have obtained an order from the dispatcher in any case. However, this was usually not done in Neufahrn. The driver of the second train could not see the lack of the usual red phase after the departure of the first train due to the heavy fog. When he passed the signal after leaving, it was recognized as correct for him.

Construction progress in March 2017 on the connection between the Neufahrner curve and the Munich-Regensburg railway line

As part of the Erdinger ring closure , planning began in 2006 for a connecting curve near Neufahrn to connect the airport to Eastern Bavaria. In April 2013, Deutsche Bahn and the State of Bavaria signed the implementation and financing agreement. The construction of the 2.5 km long Neufahrner curve began with the groundbreaking on October 27, 2014. The double-track and electrified connecting curve branches off from the Neufahrner Spange in front of the Neufahrn train station, crosses the A92 and then meets the line towards Freising and Regensburg . On December 6, 2018, the curve was officially opened with a special train. Deutsche Bahn began operating as planned with the timetable change on December 9, 2018.

traffic

In passenger transport, the route is served every 20 minutes by the S1 line of the Munich S-Bahn with class 423 electric multiple units. This runs from Munich-East via the main route and the Munich – Regensburg route to Neufahrn. In most cases, the train is split here . The front part of the train continues to Freising , the rear part over the Neufahrner Spange to the airport. In addition to the S-Bahn, a few freight trains run to the airport.

Since December 9, 2018, the national airport express ( ÜFEX ) of the DB Regio has been running every hour from Regensburg Hbf via Freising and the Neufahrner curve to Munich Airport. Series 442 electric multiple units are used .
