The E-Netz Augsburg is a tendering network for local rail passenger transport in the greater Augsburg area , which was tendered by the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport Baden-Württemberg . From 2008 to 2022, the DB Regio Bayern network will be operated as the Fugger Express .

Route overview

The tender includes lines on the routes from Munich via Augsburg to Ulm ( timetable (KBS) 980), from Munich via Augsburg and Donauwörth to Treuchtlingen (KBS 910) and the Donauwörth - Aalen route (KBS 995). Both Ulm and Aalen are in Baden-Württemberg .

From 12/2022, the Augsburg E-Netz will be expanded to include the Treuchtlingen - Würzburg route (KBS 920).

Award

Between the start of operations in 12/2008 and 12/2019, the network was operated by DB Regio , which will also operate the transitional agreement between 12/2019 and 12/2022.

From 12/2022 the transport company Go Ahead will take over the network. On December 7, 2018, Go Ahead was awarded the contract for Lot 1 of the Augsburger Netze by the BEG. Lot 1 comprises the Ulm - Augsburg - Munich, Würzburg - Ansbach - Treuchtlingen - Donauwörth - Augsburg and Aalen - Nördlingen - Donauwörth axes.

Teething problems

The first order for the Fugger-Express included 37 four-part Alstom Coradia Continental vehicles with a total value of around 160 million euros for traffic in the Augsburg area.

At the beginning of March 2008, a finished multiple unit of this type was presented for the first time. On July 18, 2008, DB Regio presented the railcar 440 007 to the press at Augsburg Central Station and to the public on August 8, 2008.

In October 2008 it became known that the approval of the multiple units by the Federal Railway Authority was delayed due to problems in the control technology. The vehicles could therefore not be used as planned for the timetable change in December 2008. In the transition period, the traffic was handled as before with locomotive-hauled trains of the 111 series with double-deck cars or the 110 or 111 series with n-wagons , some of which were hauled by two locomotives (so-called sandwich covering). Alternatively, vehicles from the 425 series were also used. You still had to change trains in Augsburg Hauptbahnhof if you wanted to take the branches towards Ulm or Treuchtlingen.

Originally, for the “small timetable change” in June 2009, it was planned to start the entire operation with the railcars and thus also the wing concept (Treuchtlingen – Augsburg / Ulm – Augsburg coupled together further to Munich). However, only 25 of 37 vehicles had been delivered by then, and not all of them were registered. In addition, the software for winging and uniting trains in Augsburg had not yet been released. Until June 2009, the Deutsche Bahn operated with a replacement concept, which still had to be changed in Augsburg. However, 125 train services during the week could be covered with the new railcars already registered. Between June 2009 and January 2010, the replacement concept and the already registered vehicles were used in mixed operation.

In January 2010, all 37 trains ordered went into passenger service.

In March 2010, the railway compensated around 1,500 ticket subscribers for some comfort deficiencies in the vehicle.

Bad quality ranking and petition

In 2011, the E-Netz Augsburg was only ranked 8th out of 13 comparison networks in a BEG quality ranking, when the Bavarian Railway Company in open and covert tests and in passenger surveys 13 Bavarian comparison networks according to the criteria "cleanliness", "functionality of the equipment", " Service ”,“ Customer orientation for complaints ”and“ Passenger information ”compared. As in 2010 and 2009, the Bavarian Railway Company imposed contractual penalties due to lack of punctuality in the area of ​​the Augsburg E network, which were used to expand the range of services offered by the Fugger Express.

In July 2012, the Pro Bahn passenger association collected signatures for a state parliament petition that was supposed to bring improvements to the Fugger Express. One of the main demands was that more commuter capacity should be made available to and from Munich in the morning and evening. In addition, they asked for luggage racks in the car and more spacious seating. The aim of the signature campaign was to put pressure on the Ministry of Economics and the Bavarian Railway Company, which are responsible for local transport in Bavaria. The petition was supported by the Pirate Party .

In March 2013, independent quality auditors came to the conclusion that the convenience of toilets and air conditioning in the Fugger Express had improved compared to 2012.

At Deutsche Bahn, locomotives of the 111 series (sometimes also 110) with double-deck wagons or, alternatively, Bn wagons ( Silberlinge ) were used until around 2010 . Some of these sets were sandwich-covered, which means that a locomotive drives at the start and end of the train.

Four-part Alstom Coradia Continental (440 series) multiple units with 236 seats each have been in service since 2010 (with the exception of a few cycles) .

Line network

Every hour there is a regional express line from Munich Hbf to Augsburg Hbf , where the train is split and the parts of the train continue to Ulm Hbf and nac Treuchtlingen . Another line also runs on the same routes every hour, but the train parts already end in Dinkelscherben on the route to Ulm or in Donauwörth on the route to Treuchtlingen. Between Augsburg and Munich, these lines run every half hour from early morning to around 9 p.m. In the Augsburg – Gessertshausen section, the offer increases to 4 trains per hour in rush hour traffic. Since December 14, 2008, three trains per hour and direction have been running between Augsburg and Meitingen during rush hour and between Augsburg and Dinkelscherben there is an all-day half-hourly service from Monday to Friday.
