The Donau-Isar-Express , or DIX for short , is a regional express line in Bavaria that connects the city of Munich with Passau via Landshut and Plattling . The line, introduced in December 2009, is operated by DB Regio Bayern and is mainly served by four- and five-car multiple units of the Alstom Coradia Continental type (DB class 440).

Transport offer

The Donau-Isar-Express has been running on the DB course book route 931 since December 13, 2009. The Munich – Regensburg railway is used between Munich and Landshut, the Landshut – Plattling railway between Landshut and Plattling , and the Passau– railway between Plattling and Passau . Regensburg .

The trains between Munich Hbf and Passau Hbf run every hour from around 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Regular stops are in Freising , Moosburg, Landshut Hbf , Wörth (Isar) , Dingolfing, Landau (Isar) , Plattling , Osterhofen (Niederbay) and Vilshofen (Niederbay). A pair of trains also stops in Munich-Moosach during the afternoon rush hour .

The trains take an average of 2 hours and 13 minutes to cover the 191-kilometer route. The departure times in Munich Hbf and Passau Hbf are each just before half an hour, the arrival accordingly shortly after half an hour. The necessary train crossing on the single-track line between Landshut and Plattling will take place at Wörth (Isar) station as scheduled .

vehicles

Electric multiple units of the type Alstom Coradia Continental (DB class 440), designed as articulated trains with Jakobs bogies , are used on the route. In the course of the introduction of the Donau-Isar-Express, six four-car trains (440 043-440 048) with a length of 71 meters and 233 seats, twelve of them in the first class , and six five-car vehicles (440 201-440 206) were included a length of 87 meters and 290 seats, 24 of which are in first class. At rush hour, up to three trains are coupled between Munich and Landshut in order to cope with the large number of passengers. Each of the twelve trains of the Donau-Isar-Express is to be named with a name of the stops served. So far, train 440 203 has been given the name "Passau - Living on Three Rivers", while train 440 044 has been named "Plattling - Nibelungenstadt". Other vehicles have since been named "Wallersdorf" (440 048), "Landau ad Isar" (440 206), "Moosburg ad Isar" (440 202) and "Landshut" (440 204).

After delays in the delivery of the vehicles, trains from n-cars or double-deck cars and locomotives of the DB class 111 were used in the period from the start of operations in December 2009 to June 2010 . On the instructions of the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG), a pair of six double-decker cars, built in 1997, and one class 111 electric locomotive at both ends have been running Monday to Friday during rush hour since 2013.

history

With the Danube-Isar-Express, an hourly direct connection from Passau to Munich was offered for the first time when operations began in December 2009. This meant an increase in traffic on this route by around 25 percent to around 2.6 million train kilometers per year. On the route between Landshut and Plattling, the Donau-Isar-Express has been the only connection in passenger traffic since 2009 . In the course of the start of operations, the stop in Otzing was shut down; This gave the Plattling train station the function of a full node with optimal connections in all directions.

In the first five years after the start of operations, the number of passengers on the Donau-Isar-Express increased by around 25 percent. The associated capacity problems have been countered, among other things, by optimizing the train routing so that more seating capacity is available during rush hour. In addition, trains from class 111 electric locomotives and six double-decker cars have been used again since 2013 - as they did in the first six months after operations began. To increase leisure traffic, DB Regio Bayern introduced the “Regio-Ticket Donau-Isar” in 2014, which is only valid in local traffic on the Munich – Landshut – Plattling – Passau route.

The Donau-Isar-Express was ranked 12th out of 15 in the BEG quality ranking in 2013 and 18th out of 31 in 2019. The punctuality (delay of less than six minutes) of the DIX was around 94 percent in January 2013, in October 2013 only 90.4 percent. In 2018, the punctuality was 90.1 percent.

future

End of 2019, the local transport services in the network Danube Isar for the period from December 2024 and December 2036 were new from the BEG advertised ; the contract should be awarded in summer 2020. In addition to the current route of the Danube-Isar-Express, the following routes will also be served:

  • Regional-Express Munich-Airport-Freising-Landshut-Regensburg (today supra-regional airport express, or ÜFEX for short)
  • Regional Express Munich – Freising – Landshut – Plattling / Regensburg (only during rush hour)
  • Regionalbahn (Munich–) Freising – Landshut (only until the second main line of the Munich S-Bahn starts operating , approx. 2028)

The new transport contract is intended to be accompanied by the use of barrier-free and air-conditioned new vehicles.
