The 612 series are tilting technology local railcars from Deutsche Bahn AG . The vehicles are mainly used as Regional Express and Interregio Express on curved routes. The manufacturer Bombardier Transportation calls the vehicles RegioSwinger .

development

After the troubled railcars of series 611 German Rail made a second attempt reliable with the almost completely redesigned series 612 tilting technology to provide to rail bandwagon of German production.

612 481 in IC design as RE to Hof / Bayreuth in Würzburg Hbf

Originally it was planned to procure a second, slightly further developed series of the 611 series. In practical use of these railcars, however, conceptual deficiencies in the drive development had become apparent, which already required an independent redesign in the competition. The selected manufacturer Adtranz in Hennigsdorf therefore started almost from scratch with the development, as another debacle should be avoided.

Particular care was taken with those components that were known to have caused problems on the 611 class railcars. For example, the cardan shafts have been reinforced and fuel and oil tanks have not been installed near them.

In addition to the two-part railcars that were ultimately exclusively procured, Adtranz designed motorized intermediate cars and offered them to the DB in 1999 and 2001. There was no order.

Construction and interior design

As with its predecessors, both cars in the 612 series are motorized. 19-liter Cummins diesel engines of the type QSK19-R with an output of 563 kW each are used, enabling a speed of 160 km / h. The power is transmitted hydraulically via a fluid transmission , in which a hydrodynamic brake is also integrated. The motor bogies of both cars are one unit at the close coupling end, the bogies under the driver's cab are running bogies. The car body is supported by air springs and a cradle on the bogies and can be electrically tilted 8 ° to each side. The tilting technology is controlled by the Neicontrol-E system, which can use acceleration sensors in the end bogies to determine the beginning and end of a curve and tilt the car body depending on the curve radius and driving speed. Compared to vehicles without tilting technology, this allows a speed increase of up to 30%, as long as the route being traveled is expanded in terms of safety and superstructure technology for driving at high speeds . In addition to the service brakes , the railcars have spring-loaded brakes as parking brakes and magnetic rail brakes in the trailer bogies for rapid braking .

Using the automatic Scharfenberg couplings at the ends of the driver’s cab, up to four double railcars can be coupled and controlled multiple times . The Scharfenberg couplings automatically connect the compressed air and control lines. The on-board computers of the multiple units automatically determine the train configuration. Each railcar is responsible for maintaining certain basic functions such as lighting and heating. It is not possible to exchange electrical energy between the car units on a large scale. Status and fault messages are sent to the active driver's cab via the multiple control.

There is a passenger compartment with two windows on each side between the driver's cab, which is larger than in previous series, with a front made of glass fiber reinforced plastic and the entry area. First class seats are located here in coaches 612.0. Behind the entry area is another separate compartment with eight seats in two groups of four with tables, which was also assigned to first class. This is followed by an open plan second class room. The majority of the seats are arranged in rows, there are also some groups of four with tables. Car 612.5 does not have a separate compartment between the open-plan area and the entry area; they only contain second-class seats. At the end of the short coupling there is a multi-purpose room for storing bulky luggage such as bicycles, prams or skis, and the 612.5 car has an additional toilet. Both wagons are closely coupled with a shell socket coupling that can only be separated in the workshop . The car transition is covered with a bellows . A combined air heating and air conditioning system should ensure a pleasant climate on board.

Beginning in 2008 with the vehicles from the Kaiserslautern depot, the "small first classes" in coaches 612.0 between the final entry and the second-class large area were downgraded to second-class compartments. This happened in 2009 with the vehicles of the Dresden and Hof depots.

In 2012, the 36 locomotives stationed in Thuringia began to be converted. In addition to a new paint job on the outer walls, toilets and multi-purpose rooms with a special graffiti protective layer and the general renewal of the seat cushions, headrests and armrests in the passenger areas, the interior design will be changed. The seats in the first class are covered with leather and sockets in each seat. The interior doors have a new automatic opening system. A new addition is a train-wide passenger information system.

Since September 2014, the unit 612 112/612 of the DB ZugBus Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee has been painted in the colors of the Baden-Württemberg local transport company, white / yellow / black. This color scheme will be binding for the new operator from 2016 following the current tender for Baden-Württemberg local transport. The multiple units, which were modernized in 2016, received the same color scheme, including a lift per half-train. This required a new license, which was issued on November 30, 2017 by the Federal Railway Authority. In addition, the 1st class area was relocated and reduced, more bicycle parking spaces were set up and WiFi was installed on the train. A total of 41 units in the DW plant in Kassel were modernized for DB Zugbus. However, problems arose, so that availability suffered and replacement services had to be set up by 2019.

commitment

Germany test vehicle

The multiple unit 612 901/902 belongs to DB Systemtechnik Minden and serves as a test vehicle for vehicle reaction measurements and for acceptance and test runs of tilting technology lines. In spring 2009, this train was equipped with a pantograph for regular inspections of electrified lines. It has already been used as an inspection train for tilting lines in Croatia and Switzerland.

Since the RegioSwingers are suitable for steep routes , they are used, among other things, for test and special drives on the Rennsteig .

Germany regional transport

Class 612 train on the Allgäu Railway (as RB / RE)

A total of 192 double units of the 612 series were delivered to Deutsche Bahn, which are stationed at seven locations throughout Germany: Dresden , Erfurt , Hof , Kassel , Kempten , Leipzig Süd and Ulm (see also vehicle overview and service routes ) and from there in local transport can be used. The residency in Kaiserslautern ended in January 2015.

Since in May 2003 a woman whose arm was trapped in one of the outer doors was dragged along by an approaching train, the Federal Railway Authority decreed that the trains may no longer be used without a train attendant until all doors have been checked. After checking 140 of the 200 trains, 40 unsafe doors were found. The trains of the 612 series had been ordered with a view to their exclusive use in long-distance traffic without automatic door control . The contact strips of the subsequently installed automatic door system were not regularly maintained.

After an inspection of the axle shaft on a wheelset on vehicle 612 089 on August 10, 2004, the Federal Railway Authority ordered a series of safety measures the following day. The interval for ultrasonic tests was reduced from 480,000 to 60,000 and later to 30,000 kilometers. In addition, the tilting technology had to be taken out of service until further notice. As a result of the investigations, only 25 of the total of 192 sets were initially available.

After the timetable change in December 2005, individual trains of the 612 series with molybdenum - hardened wheels ran again at high speed. As a condition for this, the Federal Railway Authority ordered an ultrasound examination of the wheels every 5000 kilometers until all wheelsets were replaced by new types. These vehicles are marked with a white dot under the windshield. After the conversion, the tilting technology could be used again.

In the meantime, the class 612 multiple units have become indispensable for Deutsche Bahn, as they have replaced locomotive-hauled trains in many areas and represent the backbone of local transport. For this reason, the railcars were and are primarily used on routes on which the tilting technology can be used to save travel time. While state subsidies were paid for vehicle procurement, some routes were only prepared for the use of tilting technology after years of delays (e.g. Würzburg - Erfurt , Gera - Chemnitz / Zwickau ) or the expansion of security technology was postponed further, as was the case with the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway .

Since October 21, 2009, after the occurrence of malfunctions in the tilting technology drive, the railcars of the 611 and 612 series have been running again with the tilting technology switched off. With the timetable change in December 2010, the scheduled, arc-fast operation on the Franken-Sachsen-Express was resumed.

In February 2013, Deutsche Bahn filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer Bombardier with the Berlin Regional Court . The railway is demanding compensation (according to SZ 160 million euros) due to the problems with the tilting technology. On March 4, 2013, the railway also named 160 million euros.

In December 2015, a technical fault was found in a component of the tilting drive on a vehicle from the 612 series. Due to this, the tilting technology was temporarily taken out of service again on December 19, 2015 in the 611 and 612 series and they ran at conventional cornering speed.

"Deutsche Bahn has decided to switch off the tilting technology on the regional trains of the 611 and 612 series from Saturday, December 19. The reason is the checking of a functional error on the tilting technology drive of a vehicle. Since the safe operation of the DB vehicle fleets has top priority, the tilting technology remains switched off until the cause of the functional error has been finally clarified and effective measures can be taken to rectify it. "

Germany long-distance transport

Two units in IC use between Nuremberg and Dresden on the Schlömener curve near Neuenmarkt

As a replacement for the class 605 ICE diesel multiple units, class 612 multiple units were used between December 2003 and August 2004 in intercity traffic between Nuremberg and Görlitz . For this purpose, the normally traffic red (color of DB local transport) trains were repainted in the ICE color scheme light gray with red stripes and thus adapted to the appearance of the rest of the IC fleet. In addition, the seat sets received protective head covers.

These 17 railcars were assigned to the 612.4 series by increasing the serial number by 300 each: 612 163/663; 612 164/664; 612 171/671; 612 172/672; 612 177/677; 612 179 / 679-612 182/682; 612 185 / 685-612 192/692 in 612 463/963; 612 464/964; 612 471/971; 612 472/972; 612 477/977; 612 479 / 979-612 482/982; 612 485 / 985-612 492/992. They received holders for reservations. Plans announced in November 2003 to equip the vehicles with new interior fittings totaling around one million euros had not been implemented by mid-2004.

All of them have now been repainted traffic red and the protective covers removed, but they still have their 400 company number and are stationed in Hof. The twelve trains used as the Franken-Sachsen-Express from December 10, 2006 to December 13, 2014 were all former "Long-Distance RegioSwinger".

Croatia

The last eight railcars from the major DB order, which the DB had no longer accepted, were sold to the Croatian Railway (HŽ), where the RegioSwinger operated as HŽ 7123 and since 2005 as InterCity Nagibni (ICN) on the Zagreb - Split route can be used. Since 2007, the trains have been increasingly used on other routes. A second toilet per unit was retrofitted for long-distance use. One of the two remaining multi-purpose rooms was equipped with a luggage rack, the other was replaced by a sideboard.

In an accident on the very first day of operation (sabotage with a transverse sleeper in the track), a set was damaged. A second was badly damaged in a collision with a truck.

On July 24, 2009, a train derailed on its way from Zagreb to Split near Kaštel Stari. Six people were killed in the accident and at least 55 others were injured. The cause of the accident was initially suspected to be deformation of the tracks at air temperatures of up to 40 degrees. Later reconstructions of the accident showed that a chemical applied to the tracks as fire protection could have triggered the accident, as this had led to the required braking time tripling in tests. One of the first to drive to the scene of the accident was unable to brake in time and derailed at the scene of the accident.
