The Cham – Waldmünchen line is a branch line in Bavaria . It runs in the eastern Upper Palatinate from Cham to Waldmünchen .
history

In order to connect the glassworks in Waldmünchen and Herzogau to the railway and to supply them with coal, which is cheaper than wood, the planning of a railway line from Cham to Waldmünchen began on May 14, 1890. After the " Geiganter Line" prevailed over the "Grafenkirchener Line" when choosing the route , the Bavarian State Railway began construction work. The line was finally opened on August 1, 1895.
After the connection of the Sudetenland , work began to extend the line to Ronsperg . As a result of the reversed war situation during the Second World War, construction was stopped and never continued.
Since May 31, 1992, the Regentalbahn has been handling train traffic on the route on behalf of the German Federal Railroad (DB), later the Deutsche Bahn AG (DB), using diesel multiple units. Since 2001 vehicles of the type Regio-Shuttle RS1 have been driving the route under the name Oberpfalzbahn .
From May 23, 1993, the DB also commissioned the Regentalbahn to carry out freight traffic to the Waldmünchen terminus, until the services were discontinued with the cancellation of the Waldmünchen tariff point on June 30, 1994 and the collection of the last car on August 10, 1994. All that remained was the domestic waste transport from the Cham Müll siding to Schwandorf, which was handled by DB (today: DB Cargo Deutschland ) itself .

In 2002 the route was shortened by around 300 meters and a new terminal stop was built at a correspondingly larger distance from the city center. All that remained of the former Waldmünchen train station was the reception building , which is used privately today. The tracks, the engine shed and the warehouse were demolished, and parking spaces and several shops were created on the former station area.
In the same year, the route was included in the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Landkreis Cham (VLC). Since then, the VLC tariff has been in effect on this route.
The train services of the railway line are part of the "Regionalzügenetz Ostbayern" tender by the Bavarian Railway Company . The winner of this award is to start operating regional rail services between Cham and Waldmünchen in December 2014.
From the timetable change in December 2015 to December 2016, the Grub demand stop was not served due to the lack of mandatory lighting; after being equipped with this, it was put back into operation.
Since then, all trains have stopped in Grub again if required.
The route is served by line OPB5 (Cham – Waldmünchen) every almost two hours. The only intermediate stop that is not required is the Geigant stop.
