The XV. District of the Hungarian capital Budapest consists of the districts Rákospalota, Pestújhely and Újpalota and is therefore also called Rákospalota-Pestújhely-Újpalota . It is located in the northeastern part of Pest .

Location and description

The 15th district is located to the left of the Danube on the outskirts of Budapest and borders the cities of Dunakeszi and Fót and the municipality of Csömör to the north and east . Neighboring districts are Újpest (4th district) in the west, Zugló (14th district) in the south and the 16th district in the east. The district is bounded to the west by the Budapest-Szob railway line , south by the Budapest Ring Railway ( Körvasút ) and east by the Rákospalotai határút road. In the north, the border roughly follows the course of the Budapest M0 ring road .

By far the largest part of the area of the 15th district is taken by the district Rákospalota, so that its name is sometimes used synonymously for the entire district. The district consists mainly of row houses and a large industrial area on the outskirts. A special feature of the settlement structure is the MÁV-telep housing estate , which was built at the beginning of the 20th century for middle-income employees of the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) in the style of a garden city (similar to Wekerle-telep ). The two shopping centers Pólus and Asia Center are also located in the area of Rákospalota .

Pestújhely has grown together with Rákospalota, both parts of the city are similar in their settlement structure. There is the Pesti Északi Kórház, the only hospital in the district.

The Újpalota district mainly consists of large residential blocks 1970-1975 in plate design were built. It comprises a total of 15,400 apartments in which 36,259 people (as of 2001), almost as many as in Rákospalota, which is much larger in terms of area, live.

history

Rákospalota was first mentioned in 1281 under the name Nyír . In the 14th century the village was given the name Palota , which changed to today's name in the first half of the 19th century. The place experienced an upswing with the construction of the railway line from Pest to Vác, which was completed in 1845 (today's Budapest − Szob railway), as a result of which Rákospalota was connected to the horse-drawn tram in 1872 and to the Budapest tram network in 1894 . In 1909 Pestújhely also became an independent municipality. Rákospalota received city rights in 1923. In 1941, 2,240 Jews lived in Rákospalota; they were ghettoized in May 1944 and collected with the Jews from Pestújhely in a brick factory in Budakalász at the end of June 1944 and deported from there to the Auschwitz concentration camp .

Rákospalota and Pestújhely were incorporated into Budapest in January 1950 and together formed the 15th district of the capital. In the 1960s, planning began for the construction of the Újpalotai lakótelep prefabricated housing estate , which was the largest of its kind in Hungary when it was completed in 1975. The city district then reached a population of over 100,000, which has since decreased to around 80,000.
