Trstice (Hungarian Nádszeg ) is a municipality in Trnavský kraj in southwest Slovakia .

geography

The municipality is located in the flat Danube plain in the Danube lowlands between the rivers Little Danube and Čierna voda , 19 km from Dunajská Streda and 23 km from Galanta . Sometimes the area is also referred to as Mattesland .

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1608 as Nagy Szegh after the place had been founded shortly before, in the years 1594–1596. According to Matthias Bel , the name should refer to the large occurrence of reeds around the place. In the later 17th century the community was devastated several times by Turkish attacks and anti-Habsburg uprisings. It was nevertheless able to develop into one of the largest communities in the area.

Until 1918/1919 the community was in Pressburg County in the Kingdom of Hungary , after which it came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . 1938–1945 it was again part of Hungary as a result of the First Vienna Arbitration .

The place, almost entirely inhabited by inhabitants of Hungarian origin, was given the Slovak name Trstice (trstina (Slovak) = nád (Hungarian) = reed) in 1948 for national political reasons.
