Jelka (Hungarian Jóka ) is a municipality in western Slovakia with 3982 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

The community is located in the Danube lowlands , on the banks of the Little Danube , 19 km southwest of Galanta .

history

Roman Catholic Church

The first written mention of the village as Ilka comes from 1197, it was owned by the Ilka family. In the 13th century it was mentioned as Ilka, Iolka and also as Jelka . Its first Roman Catholic church was built around 1250. Since 1353 it belonged to the Poor Clares of Óbuda . Since the 16th century it was called Nagy Jóka , its neighboring villages were mentioned as Kis Jóka and Újhelyjóka (Nová Jelka), which were all three independent villages and owned by the Farkas, Takács and Udvarnoki families . In the middle of the 19th century Nagy Jóka and Kis Jóka had a total of 2341 inhabitants (1730 Catholics, 322 Lutherans, 243 Jews and 46 Protestants). In 1910 it had 2,494 predominantly Hungarian inhabitants. The municipality belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary in Pressburg County until 1918 . In 1944 its Jewish population, 250 residents, were deported to concentration camps.

After the end of the First World War it came to Czechoslovakia as a result of the Trianon Treaty , and from 1938 to 1945 it was again part of Hungary due to the First Vienna Arbitration . After the end of the Second World War it was rejoined to Czechoslovakia and has been part of Slovakia since 1993 . In 1960 the previously independent village Nová Jelka lost its independence and was incorporated into the Jelka municipality.

According to the 2011 census, Jelka had 3592 inhabitants, including 2314 Magyars, 1396 Slovaks, 127 Roma, nine Czechs, eight Germans, three Russians, two Croats and one each Pole and Ukrainian; four residents were of a different ethnic group. 41 residents gave no answer. 3151 inhabitants belonged to the Roman Catholic Church, 204 inhabitants to the Evangelical Church AB, 162 inhabitants to the Reformed Church, 22 inhabitants to Jehovah's Witnesses, 19 inhabitants to the Methodist Church, 11 inhabitants to the Baptists; all other denominations had fewer than ten believers and 11 residents were of other denominations not listed in the statistics. 192 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 111 inhabitants has not been determined.

Attractions

  • Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist was built around 1250 in the Romanesque style, rebuilt in 1756 in the Baroque style. Its main altar dates from 1697.
