Dolná Streda (until 1927 Slovak "Dolná Streda nad Váhom" or "Považská Streda"; Hungarian Alsószerdahely - until 1907 Vágszerdahely ) is a municipality and a town in the west of Slovakia , with a population of 1,623 (as of December 31, 2019) and is located in Okres Galanta , an administrative unit within the Trnavský kraj .
geography
Dolná Streda is located in the Slovakian Danube lowlands , more precisely in the Danube hill country on the right bank of the Waag , near the town of Sereď (3 km).
history
There are numerous archaeological finds in today's municipality: in addition to the older ones from the Stone, Bronze or Iron Ages, there are also ancient Hungarian and Slavic tombs from the 10th and 11th centuries. The place itself was first mentioned in writing in 1283 as Zerdahel . In 1312 it was burned down by an army of the oligarch Matthäus Csák . Dolná Streda belonged to the estate of the Archdiocese of Gran for a long time. In the 16th century it was mentioned as a market town with a right to hold a weekly market. In addition to agriculture, some handicrafts as well as rafting and fishing were therefore well developed.
From 1971 to 1990 Dolná Streda was a district of Sereď. In 1965 a large nickel smelter (closed again since 1992) was built west of the village. Although it offered many jobs for the area, it left behind a problematic environmental-biological legacy, which today still results in a toxic waste dump.
