Veľká Mača (until 1948 in Slovak "Veľký Mačad", until 1927 "Hrubý Mačad"; Hungarian Nagymácséd ) is a municipality in western Slovakia with 2538 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
The municipality is located in the Slovakian Danube lowlands , on a plain between the rivers Dudváh west and Waag east of the place. The protected oak grove Mačiansky háj can be found southwest of the built-up area , otherwise the area is deforested. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 124 m nm and is six kilometers from Sereď and Sládkovičovo , eight kilometers from Galanta and about 55 kilometers east of the Slovak capital, Bratislava .
Neighboring municipalities are Sereď in the north, Dolná Streda in the northeast, Gáň in the east, Galanta in the south, Sládkovičovo in the south-west, Malá Mača and Abrahám in the west and Hoste in the north-west.
history
The archaeological site of Mačianske vŕšky is located near Veľká Mača . One find from there, a cross (more precisely an encolpion ) from the 10th century, was depicted on the Slovak 10-krone coin until 2008, before the introduction of the euro .
Veľká Mača was first mentioned in writing as Mached in 1326 . Other historical names include Mached utraque (1335), Machid (1390), Nagmached (1473), Welky Maczid (1773). The village was owned by various families of the landed nobility, in the 16th century part of the village belonged to the dominion of Schintau Castle . The inhabitants were mainly employed as farmers.
The municipality in Pressburg County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . Due to the First Vienna Arbitration , the place briefly came back to Hungary from 1938 to 1945 and has been part of today's Slovakia since 1993.
population
According to the 2011 census, Veľká Mača had 2603 inhabitants, including 1982 Magyars , 529 Slovaks , 11 Roma , six Czechs and one Bulgarian and one Pole . One resident indicated a different ethnic group and 72 residents gave no information about the ethnic group .
2287 residents professed to the Roman Catholic Church, 34 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, 15 residents to the Pentecostal Movement, ten residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church, four residents to the Reformed Church, two residents each to the Apostolic Church, the Greek Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church as well as a resident to Jehovah's Witnesses; 16 residents professed a different denomination. 83 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 147 inhabitants was not determined.
Buildings and monuments
The most important sacred building is the Roman Catholic St. John the Baptist Church from 1783 in the predominantly classicist style with some baroque elements. There are also some statues around the place, such as the statue of the Holy Family, Donatus statue, Florian statue, John the Baptist statue, Wendelin statue and a Trinity column.
In addition, there is a monument in the place to commemorate the Magyars, who were forcibly resettled after the Second World War as part of the Czechoslovak-Hungarian population exchange, and a Szeklertor from 1996.
Since 1997 the community has been running a village museum which exhibits the history, folk customs and landscape of the community.
education
The community operates a primary school with a kindergarten.
traffic
On the edge of Veľká Mača, 1st order road 62 runs between Senec and Šintava. The connection to the R1 expressway is four kilometers away.
The nearest train stations are in Gáň on the Leopoldov – Galanta line (three kilometers) and Sládkovičovo and Galanta on the Bratislava – Budapest line (eight kilometers each).
