Horné Saliby ( Hungarian Felsőszeli ) is a municipality in Okres Galanta in western Slovakia . It is located in the Danube lowlands on the Salibský Dudváh river , 117 meters above sea level, 8 km south of Galanta .
history
The place was first mentioned as Zeli in 1217 . In the years 1237–1240 the area was already clearly separated from today's neighboring municipality Dolné Saliby as utraque Zeli and belonged to the Pannonhalma Abbey , then from the 15th century to the estate of Schintau , where it remained until the beginning of the 19th century. The current form Felsőszeli is also mentioned in the 16th century . In 1523 it became a market town.
Until 1918/19 the community belonged to Pressburg County in the Kingdom of Hungary , after which it came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . 1938–1945 it was again part of Hungary as a result of the First Vienna Arbitration . In the years 1947-48 there was a population exchange between Czechoslovakia and Hungary, as a result of which some Slovak families from Hungary came to the municipality and some Hungarian residents moved to Hungary.
population
In 1910 the community was an almost entirely Magyar village: of the 3477 inhabitants, 3463 were Hungarians, 9 Slovaks, 4 Germans and 1 other.
According to the 2001 census, of the 3134 inhabitants, a majority were Hungarians (2100 inhabitants), but there was also a large Slovak minority (1001 inhabitants).
