Kőbánya is one of the typical industrial areas in Budapest. In 1874 the population was 7,650, but increased to 52,000 by 1910 as a result of industrialization. In 1896 the Budapesti Gyűjtőfogház was built, which for a long time was considered the largest prison in Central Europe .

Kőér utca

There were several stone quarries in today's urban area, from which the name of the district is derived. After its closure the empty caves have been converted into the basement and also for a brewery used.

There were also several large landfills in Kőbánya, most of which were recultivated . The Újhegy residential district, for example, was built on a heaped garbage dump.
