Magyar Televízió ( MTV , German Hungarian Television ) was a national Hungarian public service media group that was integrated into Duna Média on July 1, 2015 .

It is financed through grants from the state, which are approved by a parliamentary majority, as well as advertising revenues. The institute's budget in 2006 was 19.5 billion forints , the equivalent of around 72 million euros . Until 2002 there were also license fees, which were subsequently abolished. In 1997 the budget was 37 billion forints.

history

Broadcasting began on May 1, 1957, when the May Day celebrations were reported. In 1959 there were already 50,000 users. On May 12, 1964, the MRTV was split up by a ministerial resolution. The two independent branches Magyar Rádió ( MR , German Hungarian radio ) and Magyar Televízió were created.

In 1997 , according to the new media law, the second MTV station (now m2 ) ended terrestrial broadcasting and since then has only been received via satellite or cable TV, which is a very rare method for public television broadcasters. The two new private broadcasters TV2 and RTL Klub got the terrestrial frequencies . For several years, m2 has been receivable again terrestrially in many areas of the country via DVB-T .

On the evening of September 18, 2006, the main building was occupied by an angry crowd. The occupation was a reaction to the government crisis triggered by the Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány . Broadcasting had to be briefly interrupted. On the morning of September 19, protesters left the building after the situation had calmed down.

Since 2008, content has also been available in HD on both channels .

After the amendment to the Hungarian media law on July 1, 2015, Magyar Televízió was merged with Duna Televízió and Magyar Rádió to form a single national organization, Duna Média .
