The Burgtheater ( Hungarian : Várszínház ) in the Castle District is Budapest's oldest permanent theater.

history

In the place of today's theater there was a Franciscan monastery in the 13th century with a Franciscan church built in 1270, which was consecrated to St. John. In this church the last Arpad, King Andrew III. laid to rest.

With the Turkish rule, the local church was converted into a mosque (after the pasha of Ofen P asa Dzsami ). In 1686 the building collapsed during the siege of Ofen . A new baroque church was built in 1725–1736 for a Carmelite order .

In 1784, King Joseph II dissolved the order and in 1786 ordered it to be converted into a theater where the plays were performed in German. Wolfgang von Kempelen was commissioned with the renovation work. On October 17, 1787, the building was opened as the German Theater von Ofen. The first performance in Hungarian took place on October 25, 1790, it was performed as a "guest performance" by the theater group of László Kelemen. In the theater, the majority of the performances were in German, and there were only very few Hungarian performances as "guest performances". Ludwig van Beethoven gave a concert here on May 7, 1800.

From 1870 the building was used as the "Chamber Theater of the Hungarian National Theater". In addition, the theater was used by various private theater groups.

From 1924, it continued to be used by private theater groups until it was closed in 1925.

The building was badly damaged in the Battle of Budapest in 1944. The interior was completely devastated.

The buildings opposite were demolished under communist rule and a free space was created in front of the theater. Archaeological excavations were carried out before that. In 1977 it was rebuilt, keeping the original exterior facade. However, the interior was completely redesigned. In the autumn of 1977 the house was reopened as the "Volkstheater".

The Hungarian government has plans to move the Prime Minister's office to the former Carmelite monastery.

A memorial plaque was placed on the outer facade to commemorate the 200th anniversary.
