Tihany [ ˈtihɒɲ ] is a municipality on the peninsula of the same name on the northern bank of Lake Balaton in Hungary . The place belongs to Veszprém county . The landscape is rich in historical monuments and natural treasures. The most famous sight on the peninsula is the baroque Tihany Abbey , founded in 1055 , whose two towers are symbolic of Tihany today.

Tihany peninsula

Tihany extends far into the Balaton and divides it into a small north and a large south part. On the peninsula are the Belső-tó and the Külső-tó , two crater lakes that are higher than Lake Balaton and formed millions of years ago by volcanism . Finds prove that peoples from the Bronze and Iron Ages lived here. The Romans also settled here. In the 12th century monks founded a hermitage on the northern slope of the Óvár mountain , the caves of which can still be visited today. As the island is rich in animal and plant species, it was declared Hungary's first nature reserve in 1952.

Tihany locality

The founding charter of Tihany is considered to be one of the most important documents of the Hungarian language , although it is written in Latin , as many Hungarian settlements and places are mentioned for the first time. The village landscape is characterized by the small houses made of basalt and reeds .
