Charter of incorporation from 1055

The monastery was founded by Andrew I in 1055 . The deed of incorporation is the oldest surviving document in Hungary. The monastery, converted into a fortress, resisted being conquered by the Turks.

In 1786 it was closed by Emperor Joseph II and reopened in 1802. In 1921, the last Hungarian king, Charles IV, was interned here for a short time after a failed attempt at restoration. In 1950 the abbey was closed. In 1990 the building complex was handed back to the Benedictines and has been inhabited by monks since 2012. Since 2012 it has been an independent priory of the Pannonhalma Archabbey with nine monks.

The monastery church of St. Maria and Anianus was rebuilt from 1740 to 1754 under Abbot Ágoston Lécs in place of a previous Romanesque building. It is furnished in a baroque style. The main altarpiece shows St. Anianus . The baroque carvings on the altar, the pulpit and the organ are by Sebastian Stuhlhoff and are among the most beautiful in Hungary. The ceiling frescoes were painted by Karl Lotz and other artists in 1898.

The organ was rebuilt in 1993 by Aquincum Orgelbau with a baroque layout, partly based on the Silbermann organ in Großhartmannsdorf. The prospectus is from 1765.

In the Romanesque crypt , the burial places of King Andrew I and his family can be visited, as the only surviving grave monuments of medieval kings in Hungary.

The twin tower from 1752 stands on the highest point of the peninsula and can be seen from afar.

There are several exhibitions in the monastery during the summer months.
