Founding document of the Tihany monastery

The founding document for the Tihany Monastery from 1055 is the oldest complete document in Hungary . It contains the oldest written documents in the Hungarian language and in a Finno-Ugric language in general.

Longest formulation in the Hungarian language

The certificate was issued by King Andrew I in 1055 . In it he guarantees the property and rights of the Tihany Monastery, which he has newly founded . The certificate is written in Latin, with 58 words in Hungarian - mostly place names and proper names, but also a few short groups of words. Most of the places are mentioned here for the first time.

The certificate is made of parchment and is 880 mm × 370 mm in size. It is located in the archives of the Pannonhalma Archabbey .
