Cristuru Secuiesc ( Hungarian Székelykeresztúr , German  Szeklerkreuz ) is a small town in Romania in the Harghita district in Transylvania .

Geographical location

Cristuru Secuiesc is located between Odorheiu Secuiesc ( Székelyudvarhely , Oderhellen ) and Sighișoara ( Schäßburg ) in the valley of the Târnava Mare ( Great Kokel ) at the confluence of the Goagiu river from the north. It lies on the western edge of the Szeklerland .

The city is located on the National Road Drum national 13C ( Vânători - Bisericani ) and is a station on the Sighișoara – Odorheiu Secuiesc railway line , which was opened to traffic again after the floods in August 2005.

history

Allegedly the Hungarian poet and folk hero to Petőfi during the freedom struggle on the way in 1849 Sighisoara a rest have inserted under a pear tree in Keresztúr. Today a monument in the city center commemorates him. Before the battle of Segesvár (Schäßburg), General Józef Bem concentrated a large part of his troops in Keresztúr.

Besides Cluj-Napoca and Turda, the city was an important center of Unitarianism in Transylvania and the center of the so-called Sabbatarians in the region.

After the Treaty of Trianon in 1920 , the city came to Romania as part of Transylvania. After the assassination of the Romanian Prime Minister Ion G. Duca in 1933, the place now bore his name. In the Second Vienna Arbitration Award in 1940, Hungary got part of the region back under German pressure in order to be able to integrate the Szeklers into its national territory. As a result, Székelykeresztúr came back to Hungary for a few years. Since 1944/1947 the entire region has belonged to the Romanian state again.

In the Ceaușescu era, Cristuru Secuiesc was the location of the second largest children's home in Romania, which has been closed since June 30, 2002.

In August 2005, the area around the city was hit by the worst flooding in 50 years. The city itself was spared because it is not located directly on the Great Kokel.

In Cristuru Secuiesc there is a city museum and the Orbán Balázs grammar school.
