Ion Gheorghe Duca (born  December 26, 1879 in Bucharest , Romania , † December 29, 1933 in Sinaia , Romania ) was a liberal Romanian politician and foreign minister or prime minister of Romania .

Life

Duca was a member of Ionel Brătianus National Liberal Party (Partidul Național Liberal) and was minister several times in Brătianu's cabinets from 1914 (1914-1918 Minister of Education, 1918-1919 Minister of Agriculture). From 1922 to 1926 he was Foreign Minister and advocate of the Little Entente . In 1927, he became Minister of the Interior in Ionel's last cabinet. After Ionel's death in 1927, his brother Vintilă Brătianu first became party and government leader, Duca was also taken over as interior minister in his cabinet (until 1928). After Vintilă's death in 1930, Ion Duca was appointed the new party leader. This and the internal party dispute over the attitude towards King Carol II led to a split in the National Liberal Party. Ionel's son Gheorghe Brătianu founded his own party as Partidul Național Liberal - Brătianu , together with part of the right-wing nationalist, pro-fascist party wing, the so-called " Young Liberals " , which allied unsuccessfully with the fascist Iron Guard .

Duca was appointed Prime Minister by the King on November 14, 1933 and was considered a representative of liberal domestic and foreign policy and a defender of democratic rights in the face of the fascist threat. However, after just six weeks, Duca was murdered by the Iron Guard while visiting Sinaia at the city's train station. Successor as head of government was 1934 Duca's deputy Gheorghe Tătărescu , successor as party leader was Ionels and Vintilă's brother Constantin "Dinu" Brătianu . Among other things, he left a property in Măldăreşti, the Ansamblul Culei Duca. It was a comfortably habitable defense tower . In the 1960s it served as accommodation for tractor drivers .
