Gurghiu [ gurˈɟiu ] (outdated Sânimbrul Gurghiului ; German Görgen , Hungarian Görgényszentimre ) is a municipality in the district of Mureş , in the Transylvania region in Romania .
The place Gurghiu is also known under the German name St. Emrich and the Hungarian Szentimre .
Geographical location
The municipality of Gurghiu is located east of the Reener Ländchen (Ținutul Reghinului) in the northern part of the Transylvanian Basin . On the Gurghiu , a left tributary of the Mureș (Mieresch) , and the district road (Drum județean) DJ 153C, the place Gurghiu is eight kilometers east of the city of Reghin (Saxon Rain) and about 40 kilometers northeast of the district capital Târgu Mureș (Neumarkt am Mieresch) . The incorporated villages are located between two and eight kilometers from the community center.
history
The place Gurghiu was first mentioned in a document in 1248 and was a larger Hungarian settlement with city rights in the Middle Ages . The eastern part of the village is still called Szeklerstadt today .
In the area called Valea sărată by the locals, there are remains of a castle that has not yet been assigned to an era. The archaeological finds there are assigned to the Bronze Age . A Roman road is also noted. The finds in the area of the incorporated village Glăjărie (Görgenyer Glashütte) are also assigned to the same era, they are in a Budapest museum.
In the Kingdom of Hungary , today's municipality belonged to the Régen alsó (Lower Rain) district in Maros-Torda County , then to the historical Mureș District and, from 1950, today's Mureș District.

Since 1850 the highest number of inhabitants and also that of the Romanians in 1977 were registered in the area of today's municipality. The highest number of inhabitants of the Magyars (2,326) in 1910, the Roma (549) in 1941 and that of the Romanian Germans in 1850. Occasional Slovaks , Serbs and Ukrainians were also registered.
Attractions
- On the hill called Dealul Rakoczi or Dealul Cetății of the community center the remains of a medieval castle, called Cetatea lui Rákóczi by the locals , probably built on a Dacian castle and a Roman camp. These are under monument protection.
- On the area of the village of Gurghiu, the approximately 48 hectare Pădurea Mociar nature reserve with the up to 800 year old oaks and the three hectare daffodil meadow where the checkerboard flower can be found.
- In the community center the remains of a Roman settlement are under monument protection.
- In the community center, the property of the former Hungarian aristocratic Bornemisza family, built in the 18th century, was recently converted into a hunting lodge by the Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf after a few changes of ownership . Today there is a forestry school and a hunting museum here. The property and the Roman Catholic chapel with its bell tower built in 1876 in 1730 are under monument protection.
- In the community center a porcelain factory, built according to various statements in the 17th century or 1790, is a listed building.
