Bahnea (outdated Bachnea ; German  Bachnen , Hungarian Bonyha ) is a municipality in the district of Mureș , in the Transylvania region in Romania .

The place Bahnea is also known under the Hungarian name Szászbonyha and the German Bachen .

Geographical location

The Bahnea municipality is located in the Kokel Valley (Podișul Târnavelor) in the south of the Mureș County. On the river Târnava Mică (Little Kokel) , the county road (Drum județean) DJ 151B and the railway line Blaj – Târnăveni – Praid , the place Bahnea is 18 kilometers northeast of the city Târnăveni (Saint Martin) and 30 kilometers south of the district capital Târgu Mureș (Neumarkt am Mieresch) away.

The six incorporated villages are located between one and 15 kilometers from the community center.

history

Bahnea was first mentioned in a document in 1291. In the Middle Ages the place was a Transylvanian-Saxon market town. After 1600 numerous Magyars settled here and the Protestant church became today's Reformed church. On the grounds of the unincorporated village Cund (Reußdorf) , when the locals called megalithic Rain are archaeological objects of the Neolithic Age and the Cold Brunnbach from the Bronze Age have been found. The latter are in the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu .

In the area of ​​the incorporated village of Bernadea (Bernhardsdorf) , on the area called Dâmbău by the locals , there is an archaeological excavation site with the remains of a settlement from different ages; from the Latène Age to the Neolithic Age, and in the area of ​​the incorporated village of Lepindea (Hungarian Leppend ) archaeological finds from the Early Bronze Age .

In the Kingdom of Hungary , the majority of today's municipality belonged to the chair district Dicsőszentmárton ( Târnăveni ) in the Klein-Kokelburg County , then to the historic Târnava-Mică district and, from 1950, to today's Mureș district.

Since 1850 the highest number of inhabitants and that of the Romanian Germans in 1941 (most in the incorporated villages of Cund and Idiciu) have been registered in the area of ​​today's municipality. The highest number of Romanians (2,787) was found in 1966, the Magyars (2,218) in 1956 and the Roma (1,290) in 2011.

  • In the community center Bahnea, the reformed church in the 14th century, whose bell tower was built in 1904 and the country estate of the Hungarian noble Bethlen family was built in the 16th century, are under monument protection.
  • In the incorporated village of Bernadea, the wooden church Sfinții Voievozi built in 1805, is a listed building.
