Sâncraiu de Mureş [ ˈsɨnkraiu de ˈmureʃ ] (obsolete Murăş-Sâncraiu ; German Weichseldorf , Hungarian Marosszentkirály ) is a municipality in the Mureş County , in the Transylvania region in Romania .
The place is also known by the Hungarian names Székelyszentkirály and Szentkirály .
Geographical location
The municipality of Sâncraiu de Mureș is located in the Mureș Valley in the Transylvanian Basin north of the Kokel Highlands (Podișul Târnavelor) in the center of the Mureș District. At the mouth of the Cornățel stream - a right tributary of the Mureș (Mieresch) - and the district road (Drum județean) DJ 152A, the town of Sâncraiu de Mureș is located two kilometers west of the district capital of Târgu Mureș (Neumarkt am Mieresch) .
The incorporated village of Nazna (Hungarian Náznánfalva ) is located three kilometers southwest of the community center.
history
The place Sâncraiu de Mureș was first mentioned in 1293. The Pauline monastery in town was dissolved after the Reformation and its stones were used in 1610 to build the fortified church in Târgu Mureș.
An earth wall on Mount Dealul Păgânilor (Hungarian Pogánhevy ) at about 464 m is assigned to the Middle Ages and numerous archaeological finds go back to the Neolithic . A Roman road on the site is also noted.
The King of the Sinti and Roma of Transylvania lived in the incorporated village of Nazna at the beginning of the 17th century , and Jews also settled here in the 18th century .
In the Kingdom of Hungary , the municipality belonged to the Maros alsó (Unter-Maros) district in Maros-Torda County , then to the historical Mureș District and, from 1950, today's Mureș District.

Since 1850, the area of today's municipality has had the highest number of inhabitants and, at the same time, that of the Romanians in 2011. The highest number of Magyars (2,333) was recorded in 1977, that of Roma (391) in 2002 and that of Romanian Germans (18) in 1880.
Attractions
- In the community center, the reformed church built in the 13th century, rebuilt in 1900 and the Catholic church built in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 18th are under monument protection.
- In the incorporated village of Nazna, the remains of a medieval castle are under monument protection.
Personalities
- Vasile Pop (around 1827-1848), born in Nazna was 1848 in the region of Targu Mures revolutionary leader ; was hanged on October 12, 1848.
