The Mureş County ( Romanian Județul Mureş ) was the successor to the Maros-Torda County ( Hungarian Maros-Torda vármegye ) a historical administrative unit in Transylvania part of the Kingdom of Romania . The seat of the administration and the tribunal was the city of Târgu Mureș (Neumarkt am Mieresch) .

Mureș County existed from 1920 to 1950, when the Jews of that time were abolished as part of the Soviet organization of Romania . In 1930, according to various sources, 289,917 or 289,546 people were registered in what was then Mureș County.

Geographical location

In the Mureș Valley in the Transylvanian Basin , south of the Transylvanian Heath (Câmpia Transilvaniei) north of the Kokel Highlands (Podișul Târnavelor) , the district extended to 4203 or 4856 square kilometers.

The Mureş district had two cities, Târgu Mureş and Reghin (Saxon rain) and 246 villages and was originally divided into ten districts from seven. These districts were: Band with 19 villages, Gurghiu with 10 villages, Miercurea Nirajului with 48 villages, Mureș de Jos with 31 villages, Mureș de Sus with 35 villages, Râciu with 16 villages, Reghin de Jos with 32 villages, Reghin de Sus with 22 villages, Teaca (today Bistrița-Năsăud County ) with 23 villages and Toplița (today Harghita County ) with 10 villages.
