Peter John Gabbett (born November 19, 1941 in Watlington , Oxfordshire ) is a former British athlete who competed for England in the Commonwealth Games. At the British Commonwealth Games in 1970 he finished second in the decathlon .

In 1966 the decathlon was first played at the Commonwealth Games. 1970 in Edinburgh a duel developed between the Australian Geoff Smith and Peter Gabbett, in which the Australian kept the upper hand. He won 23 points ahead of Gabbett's 7469 points (7400 points according to the 1985 table). 1971 at the European Championships in Helsinki Gabbett reached 7754 points and took sixth place, the best placement of an English decathlete at international championships until then. Gabbett showed his best decathlon in May 1972 when he got 8040 points (7901 according to the 1985 rating) and was the first Briton to exceed the 8000 point mark. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Gabbett was the fastest participant of all decathletes in the 400-meter run in 46.1 seconds. On the second day he retired in the pole vault with 3.60 meters and then gave up.

At a height of 1.83 m, Gabbett's competition weight was 83 kg. His British record was surpassed by Daley Thompson .
