Marcello Fiasconaro
Marcello Fiasconaro (born July 19, 1949 in Cape Town , South Africa ) is a former Italian sprinter and middle distance runner .
He started rugby in his youth before turning to athletics . At the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1971 , he won over 400 m silver and with the Italian team bronze in the 4-by-400-meter relay .
On June 27, 1973 he ran the 800 m in 1: 43.7 minutes and was the first person to stay under 1:44 minutes. This world record was also the last hand-stopped.
In 1974 he was sixth over 800 m at the European Championships in Rome .
After a series of injuries, he ended his running career. After a few years with Italian rugby teams, he returned to South Africa.
From 1971 to 1973 he was Italian champion three times in a row. In the hall he won the national title over 400 m in 1972 and in 1975 over 800 m.
