Mariano Haro ( Mariano Haro Cisneros ; born May 27, 1940 in Valladolid ) is a former Spanish long-distance and obstacle runner .

He was national champion over 5000 m five times (1962, 1964, 1965, 1969, 1970), nine times over 10,000 m (1962, 1964, 1965, 1969–1971, 1973–1975), eleven times in cross country (1962, 1963, 1968, 1969, 1971–1977) and once each over 3000 m obstacle (1967) and in the 30 km road race (1975).

In 1963 he won bronze at the Cross of Nations . Over 3000 m obstacle he won bronze at the Mediterranean Games in 1967. At the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 he was disqualified in this discipline in the preliminary run.

In 1971 he was fifth over 10,000 m at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki and won silver at the Mediterranean Games over 10,000 m. He also won silver the following year, when the Cross of Nations was held for the last time. He finished fourth at the Olympic Games in Munich .

In 1973 he was second behind the Finn Pekka Päivärinta at the World Cross Country Championships in Waregem - only beaten by a tenth of a second. At the end of the year he won the San Silvestre Vallecana for the second time after 1966 .

In 1974 he won silver again at the World Cross Country Championship in Monza . This time he crossed the finish line just under a second behind Erik De Beck . At the European Championships in Rome he was eighth over 10,000 m.

He won another silver medal at the Cross Country World Championships in 1975 in Rabat, where he was also only one second apart from the winner, Ian Stewart . At his third Olympic Games, he was sixth over 10,000 m in Montreal in 1976 .

Mariano Haro is 1.70 m tall and weighed 60 kg when he was active. He grew up in Becerril de Campos ( Province of Palencia ) and was therefore also called El león de Becerril ("the Lion of Becerril").
