Erik De Beck

Erik De Beck (born June 6, 1951 in Merelbeke ) is a former Belgian long-distance runner who became world champion in cross-country running in 1974 .

Erik De Beck won the bronze medal in the junior ranking at the Cross of Nations in 1970 . When the Cross of Nations was replaced by the Cross Country World Championships in 1973 , De Beck finished 18th, but won gold in the team standings with the Belgian team. In 1974 in Monza he won the individual competition ahead of the Spaniard Mariano Haro and his compatriot Karel Lismont . The team competition was won by the Belgian team with De Beck, Lismont, Marc Smet , Gaston Roelants , Erik Gyselinck and Frank Grillaert . In 1976 in Chepstow the Belgian team won the silver medal; as 49th in the individual ranking, De Beck was not one of the six Belgians who were included in the team ranking. In 1977 in Düsseldorf , De Beck took 18th place and won his third gold medal in the team classification. In 1978 in Glasgow and 1979 in Limerick De Beck took fifth place with the team, in 1981 in Madrid and 1987 in Warsaw he reached eighth place with the team. Erik De Beck achieved his best individual placements after 1974 in Rome in 1982 and in Gateshead in 1983 , when he came in 17th.

Erik De Beck was Belgian cross-country champion in 1974 and 1976. He won his only title on the track in 1983 in the 10,000 meter run ; He set his best time over this distance of 28: 40.40 minutes on August 27, 1980 in Koblenz . He belonged to Edmond Vanden Eynde's training group in Löwen .
