Christos Papanikolaou

Christos Papanikolaou , Greek Χρήστος Παπανικολάου , sometimes transcribed differently, (born November 25, 1941 in Trikala ) is a former Greek pole vaulter who held the world record between 1970 and 1972 and was fourth at the Summer Olympics in 1968 . After his sporting career, he worked as a teacher for athletics at the University of Athens and as a national coach in Greece.

Career

During school he started for the Sport Club Trikala, before he moved to the National Sport University in Athens after graduating from high school and now started for Panathinaikos . In 1961 he broke the first (of a total of 13 times until 1977) the Greek record in the pole vault. He won the pole vault of the Balkan Games eight times , in 1967 and 1971 at the Mediterranean Games , took part in the Olympic Games three times (1964-72) (Olympic medalist with 5.40 m in 1968) and jumped in 1970 with a world record of 5.49 m. This feat was especially important in the Anglo-Saxon world as he was the first to cross the 18 feet. He was the world record holder for two years. In 1966 at the European Championships he finished second. In 1970 at the FISU student world championship, he also came second behind his long-term rival Wolfgang Nordwig . In 1967 he set a Greek record in the decathlon with 6,073 points and won the Greek championship with this performance. He has been voted Greek Sportsman of the Year five times and was spokesman for the Association of Greek Olympians . From 1967 to 1970 he was a student at San José State University , trained with Bud Winter , where he was able to increase his starting speed significantly. In 1969 he was an American college champion.
