Lloyd C. Winter (born June 8, 1909 in San Francisco , California , † December 6, 1985 in Houston , Texas ) was an American athletics trainer who , among other things, 27 Olympic athletes (three Olympic champions) and 37 world records , especially as a coach of the San Jose State College ( Speed ​​City ).

Life

After high school in San Francisco, Bud Winter received a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley , where he excelled in football and baseball. After receiving his BA in Psychology (1939), he continued his studies at San Jose State College, where he became an assistant coach to the football and athletics teams , specializing in sports psychology, especially relaxation techniques . He was also the athletics coach of the near Salinas Junior College, where he brought out his first world record holder in the sprint with Harold Davis . In 1942 he volunteered for the Navy and taught fighter pilots at Naval War College how to concentrate and behave properly under fire. He also developed a life jacket that inflated automatically when it came into contact with water. In 1944 he came now as a professional coach back to San Jose and stayed there athletics coach until 1974. Particularly well known are his sprinter Lee Evans , Tommie Smith , Ronnie Ray Smith and John Carlos , who ran all world records, but Christos Papanikolaou , world record holder in the pole vault , learned from him. He attached great importance to high knees in the sprint, which means that the steps are larger in the same amount of time. He also conveyed to them that relaxation is the key to success - not only to achieve optimal performance without stress, but also to increase the step size with less energy expenditure by reducing the action of the muscle antagonists. Racial equality prevailed in his training groups, so that a black sprint culture could develop here, which made a visible mark at the 1968 Summer Olympics . Winter trained u. a. also Glen Mills, the coach of Usain Bolt .

He died of a heart attack on the eve of his induction into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame while playing racquetball with his former assistant Bert Bonanno .
