Lena Malkus (born August 6, 1993 in Bremen ) is a German athlete who mainly specializes in the long jump , but also competed in 200 m and relay races. She won the gold medal at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and the 2013 U23 European Championships .

career path

Since 2008 Malkus attended the sports boarding school in Münster and graduated from the 13th grade of the NRW sports school Pascal-Gymnasium in May 2012 with the Abitur. She has been studying psychology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster since the 2012/13 winter semester . After the end of her sporting career at the turn of the year 2019/2020, she turned to her master's thesis on the topic of "Work-life balance of full-time trainers".

Athletic career

Malkus took 1st place at the U20 European Championships in 2009 and won the German Youth Indoor Championships in 2010. At the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore , she won the gold medal with a jump of 6.40 m.

In 2011 Malkus won the title of German Junior Champion with 6.70 m . On August 6th, her 18th birthday, she was again German youth champion . With 6.69 m she exceeded the B norm for the second time (6.67 m). She decided not to participate in the World Cup in Daegu , which she was entitled to.

In February 2012 she became German runner-up in the hall . She had to cancel her start at the German Championships in Wattenscheid in June due to an injury. At the Junior World Championships (U20 World Cup) in Barcelona (Spain) in July 2012, she won silver with 6.80 m. For the second time in a row, Lena Malkus won the German U23 title in 2012 .

In 2013 she was U23 European champion with a top performance (6.76 m) and for the third time German U23 junior champion.

In 2015, on May 14, 2015, Malkus won three titles at the German University Championships in Münster within a few hours: in the long jump, in the 200-meter run and with the 4 x 100 meter relay of the University of Münster. On July 24th, she became German champion in the long jump competition on the Nuremberg main market with a width of 6.74 m and also qualified for the World Championships in Beijing , where she was eliminated in the preliminary round. The distance of their championship jump was the best distance at German championships for ten years.

In 2016 and 2017 Malkus was hardly able to appear in sports because she contracted a Yersinia infection while on vacation in Bali , which was initially not recognized, and which massively weakened her body and caused a number of injuries.

In the spring of 2018, she got appendicitis. With a special permit, she was allowed to compete in the German championships despite a lack of qualification , but was eliminated after three invalid jumps. And again one setback followed the next.

At the end of 2019, after having overcome shin problems, an inflammation in the flexor approach was the final reason for the decision to end the career.

Club affiliations

Malkus started for TV Borghorst until 2006 , in 2007 and 2008 for TV Jahn Rheine , then she moved to LG Ratio Münster . When SC Preußen Münster left the LG Ratio Münster, their right to start changed to the SC Preußen Münster basic club. After many years in the care of Elke and Frank Bartschat, she dared a new start in Hamburg. For the 2019 season, Malkus started for Hamburger SV , where she was trained by Sebastian Bayer , but did not take part in any competition in the year up to the end of her career.
