Jelena Alexandrovna Sokolowa ( Russian Елена Александровна Соколова ; born July 23, 1986 in Belgorod , formerly Soviet Union as Jelena Alexandrovna Kremnewa ) is a Russian long jumper .

Athletic career

Jelena Sokolowa gained her first international experience in 2002 when she was eliminated from the qualification at the Junior World Championships in Kingston with 5.99 m. The following year she finished sixth at the Youth World Championships in Sherbrooke with 5.96 m, and then won the silver medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Paris with a width of 6.17 m. In 2007 she qualified in the adult area for the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham and came in fifth there with a jump of 6.53 m. Then she won the U23 European Championships in Debrecen with 6.71 m, the bronze medal behind her compatriot Anna Nasarowa and Denisa Ščerbová from the Czech Republic. In addition, she took part in the Summer Universiade in Bangkok for the first time and only had to admit defeat to Kazakh Olga Rypakowa with 6.61 m .

After a weaker season in 2008, she again took part in the European Indoor Championships in Turin in 2009 , where she won the silver medal behind Estonian Ksenija Balta with a width of 6.84 m . She then took part in the World Championships in Berlin for the first time, but was eliminated there with 6.51 m in qualification. Despite good performances, she was not considered for a major event in the two following years and so she only took part in the indoor world championships in Istanbul in 2012 and was eliminated there with 6.58 m in the preliminary round. With the victory at the Russian Championships she secured the qualification for the Olympic Games in London , where she improved to 7.07 m in the final and thus won the silver medal behind the American Brittney Reese . The following year she won the silver medal again at the Summer Universiade in Kazan with 6.73 m, this time she had to admit defeat to her compatriot Darja Klischina . She also took part in the home world championships in Moscow , where she finished eighth with a jump on 8.65 m in the final. Two years later she took part again in the World Championships in Beijing , where 6.44 m was not enough for a final .

Due to the ban of the Russian Athletics Federation, Sokolova has not been allowed to participate in international competitions since 2016, but received approval in 2019 to start as a neutral athlete. So she started at the European Games in Minsk in 2019 and was able to fight for the gold medal there. She also managed to qualify for the World Championships in Doha , but was eliminated there with 6.43 m in the preliminary round .

In 2009, 2012, 2017 and 2018 Sokolowa secured the Russian championship title in the long jump outdoors and in 2012 and from 2017 to 2020 also indoors. In 2012 she also secured the overall ranking of the IAAF Diamond League .
