In college he was able to improve further and in 2009 ran 10.40 s over 100 meters and 20.87 over 200 meters. In 2011 he tried his hand at 400 meters indoors and ran 47.64 s, but his focus was still on the two shorter distances. At the NCAA Track and Field Championships , he ran for 9.97 seconds, making it the 79th sprinter who could run under 10 seconds.
He left the University of Oklahoma in 2011 after signing a contract with Adidas to train as a professional athlete for the Olympic Trials .
On May 21, 2012, he completed his first Diamond League race in Doha . He started over the 200-meter distance but had to stop halfway because he was injured. As a result of the problems with the hamstrings, he had to cancel the Olympic Trials .
On February 3, 2013, he opened his new season at the Russian Winter indoor competition in Moscow . He reached the final with 6.72 s, where he was fifth with 6.74 s. At the other indoor meetings, too, he did not manage to reach his best performance of 6.54 seconds. In Ghent he set his season best of 6.70 s. He started outdoors at various IAAF World Challenge and Diamond League meetings, such as in Tokyo, Doha and New York . Apart from his victory in the B run in Doha - with 10.06 s with a tail wind of 2.5 m / s - he fell short of his top times and podium places. At the US championships, he failed to qualify for the individual start at the World Cup in Moscow in fifth with 10.01 s , but was subsequently nominated for the 4 x 100 meter relay after Tyson Gay's positive doping tests became public won silver in the final.
