Jacobus Petrus Engelbrecht (born March 8, 1987 ) is a South African shot putter .

Athletic career

Jaco Engelbrecht gained his first international experience in 2011 at the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen , where he took seventh place in the final with a width of 18.97 m. He then took part in the Africa Games in Maputo for the first time and won the silver medal there with 18.89 m behind the Egyptian Yasser Ibrahim Farag . The following year he finished fourth at the African Championships in Porto-Novo with 17.91 m and in 2013 he was fifth at the World Student Games in Kazan with 19.48 m. In 2014 he took part in the World Indoor Championships in Sopot , but retired there with 17.59 m in qualification. He then won the silver medal behind his compatriot Orazio Cremona at the African Championships in Marrakech with 18.87 m . In 2015 he reached sixth place at the Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, with 19.20 m and then retired from the qualification at the World Championships in Beijing with 19.04 m . He then won the bronze medal at the Africa Games in Brazzaville with 19.55 m behind the Congolese Franck Elemba and Mohamed Magdi Hamza from Egypt. In 2016 he won the African Championships in his native Durban with 20.00 m, but failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. For the 2017 World Athletics Championships , he received a bye as the reigning continental champion, but was eliminated with 19.59 m in qualification . In 2018 he played his last competition for the time being in Germiston.
