Jekaterina Ilyinichna Podkopajewa ( Russian Екатерина Ильинична Подкопаева ., English transcription Yekaterina Podkopayeva, born Порывкина - Porywkina - Poryvkina * 11. June 1952 in Uljanowo , Kaluga oblast ) is a former Russian middle distance runner .

Life

At the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 she won silver over 800 meters and bronze over 1500 meters , starting for the Soviet Union .

She achieved further international successes over the 1500 meters in the 1990s. In 1992 she won as part of the United Team over 1500 meters at the European Indoor Championships in Genoa and was eighth over the same distance at the Olympic Games in Barcelona . In 1993 she won gold at the World Indoor Championships in Toronto , now playing for Russia , in 1994 gold at the European Indoor Championships in Paris and bronze at the European Championships in Helsinki .

A silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Stockholm in 1996 was followed by victory at the 1997 World Indoor Championships in Paris , where she became the oldest female indoor world champion at the age of 44.
