Orkdal
Orkdal was a municipality in Trøndelag in central Norway . The seat of the administration was in Orkanger . As part of the local government reform in Norway , Orkdal, Agdenes , Meldal and the main part of Snillfjord were merged to form the new Orkland municipality on January 1, 2020 .
12,086 inhabitants lived in an area of 593 km² (as of January 1, 2019). The municipality number was 5024.
A large part of the population concentrated on the places Orkanger and Fannrem at the mouth of the Orkla River in the Orkdalsfjord , an arm of the Trondheimfjord . The main industries were salmon fishing and agriculture.
history
Orkdal's Prestegjeld was founded as a municipality on January 1st, 1838. On July 1, 1920, the port of Orkanger (1,715 inhabitants) and the southern district of Orkland (1,760 inhabitants) were separated from Orkdal to form separate parishes. In the 1960s, the work of the Schei Committee resulted in numerous municipal associations across Norway. On January 1, 1963, the parishes of Orkanger, Orkland and Geitastrand were merged with Orkdal to form a new, larger parish of Orkdal.
Surname
The Old Norse form of the name was Orkardalr . The first part Ork is the genitive of the name of the river Ork (now Orkla) and the last part is Dalr , which means "valley". Historically the name Orkedalen was written.
coat of arms
The coat of arms was awarded on April 25, 1986. It shows a silver line on a green background, which represents the Orkla, which runs through the fertile valley of the Orkdalen in the entire municipality and from which the municipality name is derived.

The Church of Norway has four parishes ( sokn ) within Orkdal parish. It is part of the Orkdal Prosti (deanery) in the diocese of Nidaros .
