Johan Bojer (born March 6, 1872 in Orkdal near Trondheim , † July 3, 1959 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian writer .

Life

Johan Kristoffer Bojer was born as Johan Kristoffer Hansen as the illegitimate child of the maid Johanne Elgåen and the trade assistant Hans Bojer (Boier?). He grew up as a foster child with the Fætten family in Rissa . As a teenager he worked as a farmer and fisherman, later also as a sales representative, fish buyer, office worker and accountant.

In 1893 Bojer published his first literary text, Unge tanker , but still under the name Johan K. Hansson. He only took his father's surname after his death in 1894. His father leaves him a small inheritance, which Bojer takes to Paris in 1895 , where he lives with interruptions until 1915. Here he meets his famous compatriot Knut Hamsun and August Strindberg , who may have influenced his decision to work full-time as a writer.

Johan Bojer's writing style is based on that of Victor Hugo and Alexander Lange Kielland . In simple, naturalistic language, he describes the life of ordinary people and the beauty of the landscape of his home country. His best known and most successful work is Den siste viking (Eng. 'Die Lofotfischer' or 'The last Viking'), a novel about the Lofot fishery around 1900 that is still exciting to read today . a. Reference to the so-called Battle of the Trollfjord of March 6th, 1890, a fight between wealthy entrepreneurs in steamers on the one hand and simple fishermen in sailing ships on the other for the fish resources of the sea. Also of interest is his novel Vår egen Stamme (Eng. 'The Emigrants') about the ultimately unsuccessful attempt by some Norwegian emigrants to gain a foothold in North Dakota , USA. To this end, Bojer undertakes a research trip to the USA in 1923, on which he also Upton Sinclair and Douglas Fairbanks sen. meets.

In 1899 Johan Bojer married Ellen Lous Lange. The marriage had three children: Thora (* 1902), who married the sculptor and painter Dyre Vaa in 1927 , Randi (* 1903) and Halvard (* 1905). From 1919 Johan Bojer lived as a freelance writer on his country estate near Oslo . Here he died on July 3, 1959.
